  • A new report from Comscore said ChatGPT is still the king of consumer artificial intelligence platforms, but people are starting to sample around and incorporate other services like Gemini and Claude.
  • ChatGPT remains the category leader, but its share of total AI prompt volume fell from 70 percent in January to 50 percent in June.
  • Claude desktop conversations grew from 1.1 million in October 2025 to nearly 40 million in April, then settled at 22.3 million in June; Gemini desktop conversations rose from 8 million to 89 million over the past year.
  • Comscore says AI is also becoming a brand discovery and monetization channel, with rising brand mentions and sponsored ads appearing in AI travel search results.

OpenAI’s conversational robot ChatGPT might be the one who started the consumer artificial intelligence (AI) craze, but competing services like Google-backed Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude are starting to chip away at its lead, according to a new report released by Comscore this ewek.

The report, which uses Comscore panel data, found ChatGPT remains the category leader, but its share of total AI prompt volume declined from 70 percent in January to 50 percent in June. During the same period, Google’s Gemini increased its share from 17 percent to 30 percent, while Claude rose from 2 percent to 11 percent.

The shift suggests that usage of AI — some are calling it “Super Intelligence,” or SI, these days, for some reason — is becoming more fragmented as consumers test and adopt multiple tools for search, discovery and productivity.

“As competition among AI assistants intensifies and prompt volume shifts across platforms, brands and publishers can no longer assume that a single AI experience defines the market,” Comscore Chief Analytics and Technology Officer Smriti Sharma said on Tuesday.

Brands increasingly need to understand where consumers are taking their questions, which sources AI systems cite in their responses and how those interactions connect to business outcomes.

ChatGPT reached 168 million desktop conversations in June and grew its multiplatform visitation to 99 million from 59 million a year earlier. Claude’s desktop conversations increased from 1.1 million in October 2025 to nearly 40 million in April before falling to 22.3 million in June, which Comscore said was still about 20 times its October level.

Gemini also posted significant growth. Its desktop conversations rose from 8 million to 89 million over the past year, though Comscore said it also experienced an early-summer slowdown.

AI assistant reach continues to expand across devices. In June, 35 percent of desktop users and 29 percent of mobile users visited an AI assistant, up from 25 percent and 12 percent, respectively, in January 2025. The report also found that adoption is growing faster on mobile than desktop.

Comscore said women continue to be the heaviest mobile users of AI assistants. Female mobile index scores for ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini were 110, 119 and 115, respectively, in June, while men over-indexed on desktop for the same platforms.

The report ound that major social platforms are seeing more overlap with AI assistant users. Between June 2025 and June 2026, the share of TikTok visitors using AI assistants increased from 32 percent to 53 percent. Meta rose from 32 percent to 47 percent, while YouTube increased from 30 percent to 39 percent.

AI-powered search is also expanding: Google desktop searches with an AI overview increased from 25.8 percent in July 2025 to 39.4 percent in June. Bing’s Copilot Search rose from 11.8 percent to 17.3 percent over the same period.

AI is emerging as both a brand discovery and monetization channel, Comscore said in its report. Fashion brand mentions in AI responses increased 123 percent and health and beauty brand mentions rose 150 percent between January and March. Sponsored ads also began appearing inside AI travel search results, rising from 6 percent of hotel-related prompts with source links in March to 24 percent by May.
