TEGNA employee charged in fatal car crash

A journalist at a TEGNA-owned television station in Tennessee is facing vehicular homicide charges in connection with a car crash that killed two people earlier this month.

Police in Knoxville say the journalist, Paul Fisher, was traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 40 in the evening hours of November 1 when he collided with a sports utility vehicle that was driving in the correct lane.

The crash killed Brian and Brandi Elmore, who had just finished attending a high school band competition where their child was participating. The child was on a school bus at the time of the crash.

Fisher was injured in the crash and subsequently charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. Police have not disclosed what caused him to travel in the wrong direction.

Fisher joined WBIR (Channel 10), the local NBC affiliate, over the summer after serving as a news intern for a local TV station in South Carolina. He previously worked as an intern for WBIR from June to October 2024.

His job at WBIR appeared to be his first in the journalism community after graduating from college. WBIR confirmed he was employed by the station at the time of the crash, but did not say whether Fisher has been placed on leave pending the outcome of his criminal case.

TEGNA, which currently operates independent of its parent company Nexstar Media Group, has not commented on the matter.
