The Washington Post is accepting applications for a new reporting position that will cover domestic terrorism, extremism and white nationalism, according to a job posting spotted by The Desk this week.

The role is described as a “high profile and demanding position that requires the investigative skills to dig deeply into a hostile world and the writing skills to deliver compelling narratives.”

The position “requires impeccable news judgment and the toughness to endure the inevitable abuse that often flows from examining hate groups.”

In other words, those with sensitive feelings and weak constitutions need not apply.

The solicitation for applications, which was posted on the newspaper’s Tumblr blog late last month, comes at a time when social movements are triggering a backlash from fringe nationalist groups across the United States. In some cases, individuals aligned with these hate groups have carried out violent acts, including aggravated burglary, arson, assault and murder.

But political parity isn’t necessary for the domestic terrorism beat at the Post: Instead, the newspaper will give special consideration to reporters who have experience “covering the far right,” the posting said.

Anyone interested in filing stories for the domestic terrorism beat is urged to submit an application and three writing samples or news clips to the Washington Post’s jobs portal by July 10.
