Philips puts Pluto TV on smart sets in Europe, Latin America

Paramount Global’s free, ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV is rolling out to users of Philips-branded smart TV sets throughout Europe and Latin America, the companies announced this week.

Philips TV sets in Europe and Latin America run a modified version of Android TV called “TP Vision” that removes the Google Play Store in favor of Philips’ own app store, similar to how Amazon Fire TV devices work in the United States and other countries.

This week, newer-model TP Vision sets sold under the Philips brand started receiving the Pluto TV app, while older-model TP Vision sets sold over the last three years will get an automatic software update that makes Pluto TV available to users of those devices.

“We are thrilled to partner with TP Vision to bring Pluto TV curated experience to millions of Smart TV viewers across so many territories,” Olivier Jollet, the executive vice president and international general manager at Pluto TV, said in a statement. “This deal is a great opportunity to bring Pluto TV to an increasingly large audience, and a testament of our commitment to building strong partnerships that make our service accessible to audiences worldwide.”

More than two dozen European and Latin American countries are getting Pluto TV on Philips TV sets, including:

  • Austria
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Norway
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • Argentina
  • Bolivia
  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Dominican Republic
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Honduras
  • Mexico
  • Nicaragua
  • Panama
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Uruguay
  • Venezuela

“We have made a significant investment in both developing the scope of our in-house Smart TV platform and on improving its functionality to be able to guarantee that Philips’ Smart TVs are among the easiest, fastest and most intuitive sets currently available,” Kostas Vouzas, the CEO of TP Vision Europe and Americas, said on Tuesday. “Part of that process is to ensure that our customers have the easiest access to the very best content, and for both subscribed and free services.”

Pluto TV channels will vary by territory, but most countries will have access to approximately 100 free, ad-supported streaming channels that include a wide variety of general entertainment, lifestyle, knowledge, sports, news and children’s shows and movies.

“Partnering with Pluto TV represents a clear advance to our offering and brings a huge increase in content to a very large potential audience. Pluto TV will play a central role in ensuring that our customers enjoy a truly enhanced viewing experience,” Vouzas said.
