Comcast’s entertainment arm NBC Universal has distributed $2.5 million to more than six dozen local not-for-profit organizations that serve communities where the company owns the local NBC and Telemundo station, the company said this week.

The donations were made as part of the NBC Universal Local Impact Grants initiative, which has distributed over $18 million to nearly 550 local not-for-profit organizations throughout the NBC-owned and Telemundo-owned broadcast footprint.

“Our local grants program invests in our communities, supporting organizations that have a meaningful impact to our viewers,” Valari Staab, the Chair of NBC Universal Local, said in a statement. “We’re proud to provide assistance to these outstanding nonprofits and help further their important missions, and thankful for the partnership with Comcast NBCUniversal that makes the program possible.”

NBC Universal does not condition the use of grant money that is awarded to eligible not-for-profits. The most-recent application period by which not-for-profits could submit for grant money ran for a one-month period that started in mid-March, the company said.

“The NBC Universal Local Impact Grants empower our stations to choose organizations that are making a meaningful impact within their communities,” Jessica Clancey, the Senior Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at NBC Universal, said in a statement. “These unrestricted funds will help the selected nonprofits advance their missions through youth education and empowerment, promoting the next generation of storytellers, and community engagement.”

NBC Universal said not-for-profits were eligible for grant money in the areas where it owns both the NBC and Telemundo stations. Those markets are New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, San Francisco, Miami, San Diego, Hartford and Washington, D.C.
