Wallet-friendly streaming service Philo regularly scores high consumer satisfaction marks with subscribers who value its approach to lean-back comfort food channels and content — and its employees are pretty happy to be part of the tribe, too.
This week, Philo received four “Best Places to Work” designations by startup community Built In for its offices in Boston, San Francisco and New York City and the workplace culture it has fostered along the way. The company previously received “Best Places to Work” designations from Built In last year and in 2023.
Pearlie Oni, the executive in charge of human resources at Philo (official designation: Head of People), said the company puts people first — “both our subscribers and our team.”
“We empower our colleagues to do their best work while fostering a culture rooted in collaboration, transparency, and openness,” Oni wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. “Guided by pride in our work and passion for what we do, we’re committed to building an environment where diverse voices and perspectives drive creativity and innovation.”
Philo has a number of employment benefits and wellness perks for its workers, including a $5,000 annual career development stipend, a $1,000 bonus awarded twice each year to employees who go on vacation, and hybrid remote-office opportunities. The company also offers a $500 per month bonus for employees who commit to working out of one of its offices for at least three days every week, and $315 in transit and rideshare-related benefits for those who work in San Francisco.
The company previously offered a sign-up bonus to new employees that allowed them to trick out their home theater setups — the place where they are most-likely to stream Philo content — but that perk has apparently been swapped for an annual home office and TV stipend that gives employees $1,250 during their first year of employment and $250 every year thereafter.
Employees also receive unlimited paid time off and sick leave, 20 weeks of fully-paid parental leave, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching and full health, dental and vision coverage for employees and their family members.
Philo’s offices are also dog-friendly. It wasn’t clear if that factored into Built In’s award determination, but it probably did not hurt.
Philo offers streaming access to more than 80 cable channels owned by Warner Bros Discovery, AMC Networks, A+E Networks, Paramount Global and other media companies, and around 100 free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) content channels. The FAST channels are available without a subscription, while the premium cable networks start at $28 per month, a price that also includes complementary access to the ad-supported plan of AMC Plus. Add-ons to Starz, MGM Plus, Hallmark Plus and Allblk are available for separate fees.
All Philo plans offer a 7-day free trial, and the service is widely supported on phones, tablets and most smart TV platforms.
