Netgem has introduced the first standalone connected television (CTV) device that brings the capabilities of Freely to existing TV sets in the United Kingdom.

The device, called PLEIO, allows TV users to watch content from Britain’s four main public service broadcasters — the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Paramount’s Channel 5 — through the Freely standard, while also streaming content from Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video, Disney Plus, YouTube and other apps available in the Google Play Store.

The integration of Freely means British consumers finally have a standalone solution that allows them to receive the benefits of the standard — including more than 50 live TV channels and interactive features like replay and on-demand content — through a platform that also allows them to access their favorite streaming apps.

As an Android TV-based device, PLEIO can also be used as a gaming platform, with a dedicated game controller included with purchase, Netgem said in a press release on Friday. The device will cost £100 (around U.S. $130) and will be sold via Amazon. A three-month trial to PLEIO Extra, which unlocks additional streaming channels and more than 250 cloud games, will also be included at no extra cost.

The launch comes as both consumers and operators confront an increasingly fragmented media landscape marked by rising subscription fees and growing complexity around content discovery. Netgem says the average viewer now spends roughly 30 minutes a day searching for something to watch, a figure that translates to nearly one full week a year.

PLEIO incorporates universal search across Freely and top subscription services, which Netgem claims reduces friction while increasing viewer engagement.

“PLEIO delivers a truly comprehensive viewing experience – Watch, Stream, and Play – that is ready for any fiber broadband-connected home today,” said Mathias Hautefort, the CEO of Netgem Group. “It represents a new approach for consumers and an unparalleled opportunity for operators to deliver both choice and exceptional value. After a decade of collaboration with national UK broadcasters and operators, we recognized the need for a simple, all-in-one platform and are proud to launch in the U.K.”

“We’ve seen great uptake of Freely and positive feedback from customers who are enjoying the platform on new smart TVs,” said Jonathan Thompson, CEO at Everyone TV, the owner and operator of Freely. “We’re now pleased to be bringing Freely to streaming devices, with PLEIO launching today. The new devices will enable audiences to integrate Freely into their existing TVs, giving millions of households who currently don’t have access to Freely an easy way to stream all their favorite shows in one place. This marks another important step forward in ensuring all audiences can continue to easily access free TV in the streaming age.”
