Hearst Television’s local station in Kansas City has named Eric Graves as the newest anchor of its weekend morning news program “KMBC 9 FirstNews Weekend,” the company announced on Friday.

Graves, a Lee’s Summit graduate, steps into the role after reporting extensively across the Kansas City metro since joining the station. During his time at KMBC (Channel 9, ABC), he has covered a wide range of local and regional stories and has been recognized internally for his accurate, thoughtful and community-focused reporting approach.

Hearst said Graves has already played a meaningful role in strengthening the weekend morning newscasts: In addition to anchoring and reporting duties, he has helped expand the use of live guests during weekend coverage and has taken on added leadership responsibilities tied to keeping the station’s digital and social media platforms current and engaging.

“Eric has quickly proven himself to be a strong storyteller and a trusted presence for our viewers,” Dan O’Donnell, the News Director at KMBC, said in a statement. “His commitment to the community, along with his energy and leadership, make him a natural fit for this role.”

Before joining KMBC, Graves worked in several competitive news markets, including Huntsville, Alabama, and Indianapolis, Indiana. His previous reporting experience includes coverage of major breaking news events such as deadly tornadoes, the Greenwood Park Mall mass shooting and the Delphi double-murder investigation. His work in those markets earned multiple award nominations, including recognition for live coverage.

Graves is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and has longstanding ties to the Kansas City area. Station executives noted that his local roots, combined with his experience in high-pressure news environments, were key factors in the decision to elevate him to the weekend morning anchor role.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve Kansas City in this new role,” Graves said. “Being able to anchor in the community that raised me is truly special.”

Outside of his professional work, Graves is described as an active member of the local community. He is a lifelong Lee’s Summit Tiger and an avid supporter of Kansas City sports teams, including the Chiefs and the Royals, as well as the Missouri Tigers. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and their dachshund.

Hearst said Graves’ hiring is part of a concerted effort to invest more resources into its local journalism. Viewers can watch Eric Graves anchoring “KMBC 9 FirstNews Weekend” on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 6 a.m. and 7 to 9 a.m. local time.
