DIRECTV has launched a new streaming television app for users of Meta Platforms’ Quest virtual reality headsets, the company announced this week.

The app, now available through the Meta Horizon Store and Meta Horizon TV, allows users to access live television, sports, on-demand programming and free streaming channels within a virtual viewing space designed to replicate a large, theater-like screen.

DIRECTV said the app is compatible with Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S and Meta Quest Pro devices. Unlike traditional pay TV apps, the experience is open to all Quest users, not just existing subscribers, through the inclusion of MyFree DIRECTV, the company’s free ad-supported streaming product.

The VR app integrates DIRECTV’s core distribution offerings, including its Genre Packs and Signature Packages, enabling subscribers to access curated channel bundles focused on categories like sports, movies and lifestyle programming. Within the virtual environment, users can switch channels, browse content and monitor live sports scores in real time.

The rollout coincides with a busy period for live sports, including baseball, basketball and global soccer competitions, underscoring DIRECTV’s push to position VR as a viable platform for premium live content.

By entering the VR space, DIRECTV is testing whether lean-back television viewing — particularly live sports — can translate into a more interactive, immersive format. The company did not disclose user targets or monetization expectations tied specifically to the Meta Quest app.

“DIRECTV’s arrival on Meta Quest introduces a new way to watch TV; bringing live sports, movies, news and on-demand content into a virtual setting,” a DIRECTV spokesperson said in a statement. “As viewing continues to evolve, it offers a more flexible and immersive alternative to the traditional screen.”

DIRECTV’s streaming packages start at $20 per month for a handful of kids networks and caps out at just under $200 per month for a package of news, entertainment, sports and premium movie networks like HBO, Paramount Plus with Showtime, Cinemax and Starz.
