  • Bitmovin will provide cloud-based encoding services to Mubi, replacing its legacy on-premises infrastructure, the companies announced Wednesday.
  • The agreement is designed to improve scalability, speed and video quality as Mubi expands its global streaming catalog.
  • The companies completed the migration without disrupting service, integrating cloud encoding into Mubi’s existing workflows.

Bitmovin will provide cloud-based video-on-demand (VOD) encoding services for British streaming service Mubi under a new agreement that will see the streaming service replace its legacy on-premises encoding infrastructure with Bitmovin’s managed cloud platform.

The companies said the arrangement will support Mubi’s expanding catalog of curated films while giving the service faster turnaround times and greater scalability as it continues to grow its global streaming platform.

Under the agreement, Bitmovin’s encoding infrastructure will support three-pass encoding, ultra-high-definition video and a multi-codec strategy that includes AVC, HEVC and AV1. The companies said the approach is intended to help Mubi optimize video quality for film delivery across its streaming service.

Mubi, which operates as a global film company and streaming platform, selected Bitmovin as its cloud VOD encoding partner as part of a broader shift away from legacy infrastructure. The companies said the migration was completed before Mubi’s older encoding infrastructure was decommissioned, avoiding disruption to catalog delivery.

The transition required close collaboration between Bitmovin and Mubi, with both companies working to integrate the new managed cloud encoding service into Mubi’s existing workflows. The companies said the full migration was completed on a tight deadline.

“At Mubi, every film we deliver deserves the highest possible quality,” Andy Dust, Chief Technology Officer of Mubi, said in a statement. “We needed an encoding partner who could match our ambitions, not just for today’s catalogue, but for where we’re taking our platform. Bitmovin’s HDR and AV1 expertise, fast response times and collaborative approach made the decision straightforward. We’re excited to build our next chapter of premium content delivery together.”

Bitmovin co-CEO Ian Baglow said the company’s VOD encoder was a good fit for Mubi’s catalog and streaming ambitions.

“With its carefully curated catalog of film content, Mubi brings quality cinema to film lovers globally,” Baglow said. “Bitmovin’s VOD encoder delivers outstanding quality of experience as well as multi-codec streaming support, so is well positioned to support Mubi in this endeavor.”
