Weigel Broadcasting has agreed to purchase a low-power television station from a church in Birmingham, Alabama, giving the broadcaster its first presence in the market.
According to documents submitted with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Weigel is purchasing the assets of Glen Iris Baptist Church’s religious television station W16DS (Channel 16) for $75,000, an acquisition that also includes the transfer of the church’s broadcast license.
Weigel intends to use the channel for one of its multicast networks, though it isn’t clear which network will be shown on the station. Two of its networks, Story Television and Me TV, are already carried in the market on Gray Media-owned WTVM (Channel 13, NBC).
Other multicast networks owned by Weigel include MeTV Plus, MeTV Toons, Heroes & Icons and Catchy Comedy. Weigel also operates Dabl, a network owned by Paramount.
