Roku Originals and Paris Hilton’s 11:11 Media are developing a documentary about the early 2000s tabloid era, when paparazzi coverage, reality television and celebrity magazines helped reshape modern fame.

“The It Girls: Inside the 2000s,” a working title, is in pre-production and will stream exclusively on The Roku Channel in 2027. Hilton will be featured in the documentary and will serve as an Executive Producer through 11:11 Media.

The project is inspired by Sarah Ditum’s book “TOXIC: Women, Fame and the Tabloid 2000s.” Roku said the documentary will examine the women who became tabloid fixtures during the period and revisit the media environment that turned celebrities into commodities before the rise of social media influencers.

The documentary will include archival material, new interviews and never-before-seen conversations with women who experienced the era directly. Roku said the project will revisit the fashion, headlines and celebrity culture of the early 2000s while reframing how those images were created and consumed.

“At Roku, we’re building an original content slate that captures and creates the entertainment and pop culture moments audiences can’t stop talking about,” Brian Tannenbaum, the Head of Originals at Roku Media, said in a statement on Monday. “Few eras are as nostalgic, fascinating, and culturally defining as the early 2000s.”

Hilton said the early 2000s changed what it meant to be famous, particularly for women who were followed by tabloids and paparazzi without the tools later afforded by social media.

“We were living in a world where the cameras were always on, the headlines were everywhere, and there was no playbook for what came next,” Hilton said on Monday. “Looking back now, it’s crazy to see how much that era shaped the celebrity culture we know today.”

The project will allow women who were once the subjects of tabloid coverage to revisit that period from their own perspective, Hilton affirmed.

“We were basically the original influencers before there was even a word for it,” Hilton said.

“The It Girls: Inside the 2000s” is produced by 11:11 Media, EverWonder Studio and Hi Mom Productions. EverWonder Studio previously produced “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” while Hi Mom Productions worked with Hilton on “Paris in Love.”
