Two journalists were shot, one fatally, while covering clashes in Egypt overnight.
Mick Deane, a 61-year-old cameraman for Britain’s Sky News, was fatally shot while filming protests in Cairo early Wednesday morning. Sky offered little details on the incident; The Guardian reports Deane was wounded “during a military crackdown” on supporters of former Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi in Cairo.
Sky News said in a statement that Deane received medical treatment for his injuries, but to no avail. “None of the other members of the Sky News team were injured in the incident,” Sky said.
British Prime Minister David Cameron reacted to Deane’s death by commending photographers that taken on dangerous assignments.
“It’s an incredibly brave and important job that he was doing,” Cameron said. “It’s essential that cameraman are in places like Egypt, otherwise none of us would know what is happening.”
A photographer for the Reuters news service was also shot while covering events in Egypt.
Asmaa Waguih received medical treatment after being shot in the foot in Cairo on Wednesday while covering demonstrations in the city, Reuters said.
Waguih was said to have survived the injury.
A third journalist, Abdullah Elshamy, was reportedly arrested in Egypt while on assignment, according to Al Jazeera colleague Ehab Zahriyeh. The news organization has not made an official statement, and Elshamy’s whereabouts are unknown.
