DIRECTV is dangling a year of free Netflix with Ads in front of prospective customers who sign up for one of its genre-based packages and who opt to grab one of its Gemini streaming devices.

The offer is available to anyone who signs up for a qualifying streaming genre pack — MyNews, MyEntertainment, MyKids, MiEspañol or MySports — and who purchase a Gemini Air device, though they don’t necessarily have to use the Gemini Air to watch DIRECTV content, even on their primary TV set.

DIRECTV’s genre packs are available through a number of connected TV platforms, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, LG webOS, Samsung Tizen, Vizio SmartCast, Apple TV and Android TV (Google TV), with the latter also powering the Gemini Air dongle that is part of the promotion.

Once a genre pack and Gemini Air are activated on a customer’s account, eligible new subscribers will receive an e-mail with instructions to activate their complementary Netflix with Ads subscription. After one year, the subscription automatically renews at $9 per month unless a customer cancels.

The genre packs have no contract, so customers can cancel at any time or switch between genre packs as they please.

The Gemini Air device works with other third-party apps as well, including Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon’s Prime Video, ESPN, YouTube, AMC Plus and Discovery Plus. Some of those apps are included in DIRECTV’s genre packs, though access varies by plan.

DIRECTV is the latest service provider to offer complementary access to Netflix to some of its customers. DISH Network and Verizon have unlocked similar Netflix-based deals in the past, and T-Mobile long offered Netflix to its premium wireless subscribers for years.

Comcast bundles Netflix with other apps through its StreamSaver store; Charter allows its Spectrum subscribers to purchase Netflix through its Spectrum App Store, which is powered by Bango.
