TDS Telecom says it is working to bring its all-fiber Internet service to more than 3,800 homes and businesses in rural Wisconsin.

The company has broken ground on its fiber lines in Whitewater, a small town nestled within Walworth and Jefferson counties, which boasts a population of just under 15,000 residents.

The build-out will be done in phases, and residents will be able to sign up for TDS high-speed Internet once it is available at their address, the company said in a statement.

Residents will see construction workers in their neighborhoods during the fiber build-out, and will be notified in advance through signs, door-hangers and letters sent in the mail.

“The start of construction marks another exciting step forward as we work to better connect residents and businesses in Whitewater and throughout Wisconsin,” Andrew Peterson, the senior vice president of corporate affairs at TDS Telecom, said in a statement. “We look forward to serving Whitewater for years to come.”

Once construction is done in Whitewater, residents will be able to sign up for TDS high-speed Internet, which offers connection speeds of up to 8 gigabits per second.

A TDS Telecom spokesperson said the Madison-based company has ongoing construction projects in nearly every corner of Wisconsin. In addition to high-speed Internet delivered over fiber optic lines, TDS Telecom offers telephone and pay television services.
