Sinclair’s technology subsidiary One Media Technologies has appointed Matthew Goldman to the role of Vice President of Strategic and Technical Initiatives, the company said on Wednesday.

In the new role, Goldman will be responsible for implementing, expanding and supporting various advanced operational technologies, including the implementation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. He will also manage conformance testing and development operational handoff processes associated with the transition to ATSC 3.0, better known as NextGen TV. One Media is the Sinclair subsidiary focused on the build out and deployment of NextGen TV, which utilizes a hybrid broadcast-connected TV approach to deliver linear and on-demand television content coupled with datacasting products, among others.

“I’m excited to take on this position at such a pivotal time in the broadcast industry,” said Goldman. “As we continue to advance technologies like ATSC 3.0 and HDR, it’s crucial to ensure seamless integration and operational excellence. I look forward to contributing to these groundbreaking initiatives and driving innovation that will shape the future of broadcasting.”

Goldman has a wealth of experience in the broadcast and connected video industries. In the 1990s, he helped create the MPEG-2 standard, one of the video transmission codecs that was utilized by over-the-air and satellite services for their digital video signals. Goldman also co-developed the Program and System Information Protocol, or PSIP, that allows television stations to transmit metadata concerning virtual channels, program information and other elements associated with digital broadcasting. He contributed to the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Engineering Handbook in 2007 and 2017, and has a number of other honors to his name, including multiple Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards.

“As we deploy new business models and capabilities across our NextGen stations we are excited to have Matthew fill this position at this critical time,” Del Parks, the President of Technology at Sinclair, said in a statement. “His deep industry experience and technical expertise at many levels of technology provides Sinclair with unique capabilities in the areas of signaling for addressable advertising and techniques for improved picture quality.”

In his new role, Goldman will report to Mark Aitken, the Senior Vice President of Advanced Technology at Sinclair and the President of One Media.

“Matthew brings extensive industry expertise and technical insight to guide the upcoming transformation of the broadcast industry. His contributions are invaluable to Sinclair and One Media’s highly skilled teams,” Aitken said on Wednesday.
