Apple is preparing the release of an Apple TV Plus app that will work natively on Android mobile devices, according to a report from Bloomberg.
The app is likely to be released via the Google Play Store, where a version of the Apple TV Plus app is already available to install on smart TVs running the Android TV operating system.
Android mobile device users have largely been relegated to watching Apple TV Plus content through the web browser version of the service. A dedicated Apple TV Plus app could help grow subscribers of the TV service, which costs $10 per month and is natively offered on most Apple devices.
Over the past few years, Apple has built dedicated streaming apps for a number of third party platforms, including Roku and Android TV, in an attempt to reach subscribers who prefer to watch content on something other than an Apple device.
Late last year, Apple also took the unusual step (for it) of offering subscriptions to Apple TV Plus natively through Amazon’s streaming app, Prime Video, where the service is sold on the Prime Video Channels marketplace.
Apple TV Plus offers hit shows like “Severance,” “Ted Lasso,” “Silo” and “Shrinking,” along with live access to Major League Baseball games and Major League Soccer events through MLS Season Pass.
