Less than a year after closing on its $2 billion purchase of Vizio, Walmart is now selling an Onn-branded smart television that is powered by Vizio’s operating system, The Desk can confirm.
The launch of the Onn TV Powered by Vizio smart TV set comes about six months after Walmart confirmed it would start selling Vizio-powered smart TVs through its private label brand in time for the holiday shopping season, as first reported by The Desk.
The new smart TV is labeled a “Black Friday Deal,” and apparently replaces the Onn TV powered by Roku that was offered in previous years. It costs $89 when purchased online and comes with a 43-inch, full high-definition screen with a 60 Hertz (Hz) refresh rate, and works out of the box with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and Google Home hubs and assistants.
The TV comes with Vizio’s full slate of built-in apps, including support for popular services like Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video, Disney Plus, Hulu, Apple TV, YouTube, Starz, Paramount Plus, Peacock, HBO Max and more, plus streaming cable replacements like YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, Fubo, DIRECTV and Philo.
Streamers who prefer free content can watch hundreds of linear channels from WatchFree Plus, Vizio’s own free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) service, or use any number of supported third-party apps like Pluto TV and Fox-owned Tubi.
As part of the launch, Walmart has apparently renamed Vizio’s streaming operating system from SmartCast OS to Vizio OS, according to a listing reviewed by The Desk. The operating system enables support for Google Cast and Apple AirPlay for those who prefer slinging content from their Android or Apple-powered phones and tablets.
