Philo has restored a lower-priced plan that offers access to premium cable networks over streaming without the inclusion of bundled, network-backed streaming apps and content.
On Tuesday, Philo announced the new plan, called Essentials, offers its core cable networks and free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels for $25 per month, or $7 less than its prior base subscription plan.
The Essentials plan doesn’t include access to the ad-supported tiers of HBO Max, Discovery Plus or AMC Plus, which are now available in the company’s Bundle Plus (stylized as Bundle+) package for $33 per month — the prior price of Philo’s base subscription plan.
The Essentials and Bundle Plus plans are available for new and existing Philo subscribers today. Streamers who use Philo to access FAST channels without a subscription can upgrade to either tier by visiting the Philo website.
Philo resellers were notified about the new plans late last week, shortly after The Desk reported long-time Philo CEO Andrew McCollum was transitioning to an executive chairman role within the company. Philo’s Chief Operating Officer Mike Keyserling has since stepped into the CEO role.
“The new Essential tier marks an extension of the company’s philosophy of meeting consumers where they are: a streamlined live TV experience centered on the channels people actually watch,” a Philo spokesperson said by e-mail. “Essential includes 70-plus live TV channels, 120-plus free streaming channels, 80,000-plus movies and shows on demand, unlimited DVR with one-year storage, and a newly-reinstated 7-day free trial.”
While the Essential tier will include a free trial for new customers, the Bundle Plus tier will not, the spokesperson clarified.
