The Walt Disney Company is rolling out a new feature that allows subscribers of its flagship streaming service Disney Plus to find shows and movies through curated playlists.
The feature, which was part of a limited test earlier this year, collates content across genres, franchises, mood and Disney characters, allowing users to find shows and movies to watch based on themes like Mickey Mouse, comedy or Star Wars, among others.
The specific content available within the playlists will depend largely on geography, since Disney holds localized rights to shows in some countries but not in others. Most of Disney’s own catalog is offered through Disney Plus globally.
Disney says it will update its curated playlists on a regular basis, with new lists built around seasonality. At some point in the future, Disney may also opt to sell sponsorships against its playlists, allowing brands to further harness Disney’s content and streaming platforms for their marketing initiatives — even if a customer opts for an ad-free streaming experience.
Viewers who launch a title through a playlist are allowed to pause, rewind and advance to a new episode at any time, the company said. In that respect, the playlists are more a collection of on-demand titles, rather than a streaming linear experience. Disney has some linear content channels on its platform in North America.
