Harold Greene, a longtime Los Angeles television news anchor whose career included prominent roles at KABC-TV, KCBS-TV and KCAL, died earlier this week at the age of 82, his family confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
Greene’s death was announced by his daughter, Courtney Greene, in a social media post that was later confirmed by KABC (Channel 7) itself.
Greene began his television journalism career in 1970 as a producer and reporter. He subsequently worked in San Diego and San Francisco before returning to Los Angeles, where he became a familiar presence on local television.

He spent much of his career at KABC, where he anchored the station’s evening and prime-time newscasts starting in 1982. His 18-year tenure ended when he left the station to work in a similar capacity at KCBS (Channel 2) and later KCAL (Channel 9), where he anchored the news until his retirement in 2008.
His reporting and anchoring work earned numerous industry honors, including Emmy Awards, Golden Mike Awards and Edward R. Murrow Awards. He was also recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In her statement, Courtney Greene recalled her father’s dedication to journalism and his distinctive personality.
“We have a feeling he’s already settling into the great newsroom in the sky, no doubt with a few suggestions on how things should be run,” she wrote.
The family plans to hold a memorial service after the holidays and has invited friends, former colleagues and viewers to share photographs and memories of Greene’s life and career. No cause of death was revealed.
KABC is part of the Walt Disney Company. KCBS and KCAL are operated by CBS, a division of Skydance.
