For the first time this year, Fox Corporation is offering a live stream of the National Football League’s (NFL) Super Bowl championship game through their free, ad-supported streaming platform Tubi — but viewers who want to access the game on Tubi will still have to give Fox something in return.
The game will be available to stream without cost through Tubi, but only to users who have an account on the platform. Typically, registration is not required to watch any of Tubi’s shows, movies or linear content streams — but Fox is making an exception with the biggest TV event of the year, and will request users sign up for a free Tubi account using the email address on file with their smart TV or by registering on the Tubi website.
By registering for an account on Tubi, viewers will have to automatically opt in to the collection of certain personal information, including their name and e-mail address. Some viewership data is also collected from registered viewers when they watch movies, TV shows or live content streams through the Tubi platform — and, by default, the sharing of viewership data is automatic, though consumers in most states have rights that enable them to limit the sharing and transfer of their personal data.
Forking over a name and email address still comes with some benefits, as Tubi will offer the national Fox feed during Super Bowl LIX. The game itself will be available in ultra high-definition (UHD/4K), with native UHD/4K graphics and an upconverted feed from cameras inside and outside Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs will play in the game — the same teams that played in the last Super Bowl aired by Fox two years ago.
Those who prefer not to hand over their personal information to Tubi can still watch Super Bowl LIX in high definition for free by using an antenna to receive their local Fox station or affiliate via broadcast TV. The NFL app for phones, tablets and smart TVs will also offer the national Fox feed of Super Bowl LIX for free.
