Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video will share distribution rights to three National Football League (NFL) games played on Christmas Day, the league confirmed on Tuesday.
The move comes several months after Netflix debuted the league’s inaugural Christmas Day games on the streaming platform. Netflix has guaranteed rights to at least one game played on Christmas Day through at least 2026.
Interestingly, Prime Video will have the evening window game this Christmas, after Netflix streams the late morning and mid-afternoon game. Prime Video is expected to continue offering at least one NFL game on “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving.
Christmas Day proved popular for the NFL, with Netflix saying its two games averaged 24 million streamers in the United States, and another 6 million outside the U.S. Post-live replays were offered on Netflix for a while before replay rights moved to NFL Plus in the U.S. and DAZN overseas.
Both Netflix and Prime Video have expressed an interest in beefing up their live sports content in an effort to win and retain streaming subscribers. Amazon includes ad-supported access to Prime Video as part of its Prime membership, though ad-free and standalone Prime Video subscriptions are also available. Netflix offers a low-cost version of its service supported by ads, and two costlier plans that stream on-demand content without commercial interruptions. Live content on both services stream with ad breaks.
