Charter has introduced a new multiview feature within the Spectrum TV App that allows its pay television subscribers to watch up to four NCAA Men’s or Women’s Basketball Tournament games simultaneously on a single screen.
The feature, announced Monday, is designed to give basketball fans the ability to follow multiple games in real time without switching channels during the annual college basketball tournaments.
Multiview is available through the Spectrum TV App across a range of connected devices and smart televisions, including Xumo Stream Box, Xumo TV, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox consoles and smart TVs manufactured by Samsung, LG and Vizio. Customers must subscribe to a Spectrum TV package that includes the networks carrying the tournament games in order to access the feature.
Through the new functionality, viewers can select curated multiview options directly from the Spectrum TV App’s home screen. Once in multiview mode, customers can monitor as many as four games at once, choose which game’s audio feed they want to hear and switch any game to a full-screen view with a single selection.
“The NCAA Tournament is the perfect time for basketball fans to experience the thrill of multiple games at once,” said Elena Ritchie, the Senior Vice President of Video Product at Spectrum. “Multiview is all about making it easier for customers to catch every highlight and stay connected to the action.”
The launch comes as streaming and connected TV platforms increasingly incorporate features designed to replicate and enhance traditional sports viewing experiences. Multiview capabilities have become a popular way for sports fans to follow multiple matchups simultaneously, particularly during large tournaments or busy game schedules.
Spectrum said the multiview feature will initially focus on coverage of the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, which take place each spring and are among the most-watched sporting events on television in the United States.
The company plans to expand the functionality later this year to include other major sporting events. According to Spectrum, future multiview offerings will cover the NHL and NBA playoffs, the FIFA World Cup, college football and National Football League games.
The Spectrum TV App allows subscribers to watch live television and on-demand content across connected devices and smart TVs, providing access to programming included in a customer’s pay television subscription.
