Google is expanding the capabilities of its Google TV platform with a slate of new features that emphasize generative artificial intelligence, personalized content discovery and enhanced photo integration as the company looks to deepen engagement on connected television devices.

The updates announced this week introduce new creative tools powered by Google’s Gemini platform, alongside expanded functionality for Google Photos and a forthcoming integration of short-form video content directly on the Google TV home screen.

Among the most notable additions are AI-driven image and video creation tools designed for use on the television screen. Google is bringing its Nano Banana capability to the TV set, allowing users to create their own AI-generated images using just voice prompts — effectively turning the TV into a shared creative canvas. Users can also remix their existing photo library through the same feature, Google said.

Similarly, a tool called Veo enables users to create short video clips from text prompts or animate existing images. Both features are launching first on Gemini-enabled Google TV devices manufactured by TCL in the United States, marking an early push to bring generative AI experiences into the living room.

Google is also enhancing its integration with Google Photos, allowing users to search their photo libraries using natural language voice queries through Gemini. The feature surfaces relevant images in a browsable interface optimized for television screens, with options to display photos individually or as part of a slideshow.

Additional tools expand on this functionality, including Google Photos Remix, which applies artistic filters like watercolor or oil painting styles to images, and dynamic slideshow capabilities that transform televisions into ambient photo displays. The slideshow feature will be available globally on compatible devices with sufficient memory, while search and remix tools are initially rolling out in the United States.

In a move aimed at capitalizing on the popularity of short-form video, Google also plans to introduce a new content row titled “Short videos for you” on the Google TV home screen, the company said. The feature will aggregate personalized clips, beginning with content from YouTube Shorts, and is expected to launch in the U.S. later this summer.

The rollout will vary by device compatibility, geographic region and system requirements, with several features tied specifically to newer hardware running updated versions of the Android TV operating system.

The updates are part of a broader strategy at Google to position its streaming TV platform as more than a passive viewing experience — instead, it wants Google TV to embody connected TV interactivity, personalization and AI-driven content. By integrating creation tools, photo management and short-form video into a unified interface, Google says it wants streamers to increase the amount of time spent on its platform while differentiating Google TV from other ecosystems.
