Roku has updated its Roku Sports portal to include recommendations from YouTube TV, the companies announced on Friday.
Starting this week, streamers with a Roku device will see YouTube TV appear as an app recommendation when they look for live athletic events and competitions that are offered on channels available within the streaming cable-like service.
Roku says the integration of YouTube TV and its linear channels into the Roku Sports portal will be a benefit to football fans throughout the National Football League (NFL) season, which kicked off Thursday. YouTube TV was a presenting sponsor of NBC’s NFL Kickoff broadcast between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. The service also carries NFL games from CBS, ESPN, Fox and NFL Network, and is one of two YouTube products to offer the NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone.
“Our priority continues to be making game time effortless for our users,” Joe Franzetta, the Head of Sports at Roku Media, said in a statement. “Partnering with YouTube TV is a major step in delivering a comprehensive fan-centered experience that simplifies sports discovery and puts live action front and center for millions of fans.”
YouTube TV joins a growing number of apps that are recommended through the Roku Sports portal, including Roku-owned Frndly TV, which offers live WNBA and NWSL games through its carriage of Ion. Fox One, DAZN, Spectrum TV and Xfinity Stream are also integrated into the Roku Sports portal.
Over time, YouTube TV will also surface as a recommendation when streamers look for non-sports events across other Roku portals, including the Roku home screen.
YouTube TV costs $83 per month for access to around 100 live broadcast and cable channels from Fox Corporation, Paramount, the Walt Disney Company, Comcast’s NBC Universal, Warner Bros Discovery, the E. W. Scripps Company, AMC Networks and Allen Media, among others.
For sports fans, YouTube TV offers an “NFL Fantasy View” on smart TVs that allows them to hook into certain fantasy football apps and receive real-time information on points accrued during games. YouTube TV also allows sports fans to watch multiple games at once through a multi-view feature, which has become increasingly customizable over time.
