DOJ launches probe into Fubo-Disney pay TV merger
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether Fubo and Disney’s plan to merge their pay TV businesess violate antitrust rules.
Fubo TV, Inc. ($FUBO, operating as Fubo) is a streaming technology provider that operates a sports-centric service called Fubo in the United States, Canada and Spain, as well as a similar product called Molotov in France.
In the United States, Fubo offers a number of broadcast and cable networks through its programming partners, including the Walt Disney Company (ABC, ESPN, FX, National Geographic), Comcast’s NBC Universal (NBC, CNBC, USA Network, E!, Bravo, MSNBC), Fox Corporation (Fox, Fox News, Fox Sports 1, Fox Business), Paramount Global (CBS, MTV, VH1, BET, CBS Sports Network, Paramount Network), the E. W. Scripps Company (Ion, Laff, Grit, Scripps News), Sinclair (Comet, Charge, TBD, The Nest, Bally Sports) and others.
Fubo also owns or operates a number of free, ad-supported streaming TV channels, including the Fubo Sports Network and Maximum Effort Channel.
Fubo is based in New York City.

Fubo is testing the deployment of personalized sports notifications to better engage subscribers during the NBA Playoffs, and could roll the feature out more broadly during football and baseball season.
The package allowed streamers to avoid Fubo’s regional sports fees by having access to only broadcast stations and national cable networks.
DirecTV will provide the Rangers Sports Network feed that is displayed on TVs within Globe Life Field, and have its logo prominently displayed on the stadium’s video billboard and LED ribbons.
The Rangers Sports Network will be offered to Fubo subscribers who live within the Rangers home market.
The plan is expected to cost between $20 and $30 less than Fubo’s current base programming package, and include access to major broadcast and sports-inclusive networks.
Executives at Fubo warned the company is likely to lose subscribers during Q1, a red flag that sent its stock price down 20 percent on Friday.
The company says the launch of the Zee Family package will be the first of many multicultural channel bundles to debut in the near future.
The letter, sent by Senator Elizabeth Warren, may or may not be effective — depending on whether the DOJ wants to focus its efforts on Fubo or Disney.
Fubo’s decision to distribute its signal on low-power TV stations makes it technically available in major TV markets, even if few people can actually watch those stations.
Tubi came the closest to delivering real-time action from Super Bowl LIX compared to other streaming services, according to a report published by Phenix.
The company claims Fubo Sports Network will eventually reach over-the-air TV users in 100 markets, but didn’t announce affiliation or time-brokerage deals with any broadcaster.
