Samsung has refreshed its free streaming platform Samsung TV Plus with new personalized content recommendations powered by artificial intelligence, the company announced on Wednesday.
The update includes a new, fully personalized home screen, improved browsing and enhanced recommendations intended to reduce the amount of time viewers spend searching for programming. The design focuses on faster access to Samsung’s free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels, shows and genres while maintaining the service’s emphasis on delivering premium programming.
“With AI at the core and a bold new look, this is our smartest and most visually stunning update yet,” said Salek Brodsky, the Senior Vice President and Global Head of Samsung TV Plus. “With these innovations, we not only bring a highly intuitive and personalized experience to FAST but also bring the true depth and breadth of our high quality programming to life.”
Samsung says the new interface offers an immersive browsing experience with simplified navigation and rich metadata along with high quality imagery that provides clearer context for selecting content. The simplified and personalized home screen adapts based on the channels and on-demand content watched on Samsung TV Plus, and surfaces additional channel and content recommendations over time.
The update also integrates linear programming with on-demand content, allowing viewers to move between formats without leaving the interface. An improved live events spotlight makes it easier to find and access sports, concerts and breaking news.
Samsung TV Plus is available in dozens of countries where Samsung ships and sells its smart TVs, smartphones and tablets, among other devices. Globally, Samsung says it offers more than 3,500 linear content streams, though some are duplicated based on their availability in different regions.
The electronics company has bolstered the prominence of Samsung TV Plus over time by inking exclusive content distribution agreements and launching channels that are only available on the platform. Early examples include Conan O’Brien TV and Letterman TV, the latter in partnership with late night talk show host David Letterman. Last month, Samsung said it was working with independent content creators like Dhar Mann and Smosh to bring more channels and programming to Samsung TV Plus. Some of those shows will be available on a new channel called the Samsung Television Network, which launched earlier this summer.
