Women’s track and field meeting series Athlos has tapped the E. W. Scripps Company and its broadcast network Ion to serve as the domestic television distributor for this year’s Athlos NYC competition on October 10.
The agreement announced on Tuesday is part of a new partnership between Athlos and Scripps Sports, which will broadcast Athlos NYC along with other future events under a multi-year deal.
The event coverage will include a pre-show called “Icons on Ion,” followed by the main broadcast starting at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Media rights and distribution were secured by Range Sports working with Seven Seven Six.
“We are thrilled to team up with Ion Network as our broadcast partner for Athlos NYC,” said Alexis Ohanian, the co-Founder of Reddit who also founded venture capital firm Seven Seven Six and Athlos. “They’ve been tireless supporters of women’s sports for years, and we’re proud to have Athlos land alongside their WNBA and NWSL programming.”
Athlos NYC will showcase a roster of elite track and field athletes. The lineup includes Faith Kipyegon, Keely Hodgkinson, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, Masai Russell, Marileidy Paulino and Brittany Brown in track events. In the long jump competition, Tara Davis-Woodhall, Jasmine Moore, Monae’ Nichols and Quanesha Burks are set to compete. For the first time, Athlos will also feature a field event, with qualifying rounds scheduled to take place in Times Square on October 9.
“Athlos showcases remarkable athletes while building culture and community,” said Brian Lawlor, the President of Scripps Sports. “We look forward to bringing Athlos and its events to fans nationwide as we strengthen our commitment to elevating women’s athletics in premium, live environments on Ion Network.”
The partnership builds on Scripps Sports’ growing portfolio of women’s sports programming. Ion Network already carries Women’s National Basketball Association games and matches from the National Women’s Soccer League.
Later this year, the network will also broadcast the inaugural SI Women’s Games, a biennial all-star competition featuring athletes from seven sports, and the Elevance Health Women’s Fort Myers Tip-Off, a college basketball tournament.
Ion is available on major broadcast stations and affiliates across the country and through streaming platforms like Frndly TV, Tubi, Pluto TV, the Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, Vizio WatchFree TV Plus, YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream and Fubo. The network reaches nearly 130 million TV homes.
