Warner Bros. Discovery to be new name of fused content company

Executives at Discovery Communications have revealed the new name for the fused company that will bring together the Warner Bros. content library with reality-based shows from Discovery’s lineup of cable channels.

The new company name, Warner Bros. Discovery, was unveiled at a staff meeting  on Tuesday, according to a report published by the Wall Street Journal.

The company’s tagline, “The stuff that dreams are made up,” is a callback to a line in the classic Warner Bros. film “The Maltese Falcon” starring Humphery Bogart.

The Journal said the new name and tagline are “intended to emphasize its heritage as a content company.” The name and tagline were revealed by David Zaslav, the chief executive of Discovery who is expected to lead the new content company when the merger is finalized next year.

Jason Kilar, the current chief executive of AT&T’s WarnerMedia, also made an appearance at the town hall meeting. It was the first time the two executives shared a stage since AT&T announced plans last month to split off its WarnerMedia content arm into a separate company that will eventually merge with Discovery.

Kilar is expected to stay on at WarnerMedia through the end of this year. Under his leadership, the company recent unveiled plans to launch a cheaper, ad-supported version of WarnerMedia’s blockbuster streaming service HBO Max for $10 a month. That tier is expected to debut later this month.
