A Memphis television reporter was arrested on misdemeanor criminal charges after she was allegedly involved in a fatal car crash over the weekend.
Kayla Solomon, 29, turned herself into police following the crash that involved 36-year-old William Scanlan, who died at a local hospital.
Police said Solomon was driving on Central Avenue near Lindsay Street, where she made a U-turn into a motorcycle that was traveling in an opposing lane.
Solomon was treated for non-critical injuries at a local hospital. She was later booked into jail on misdemeanor charges that include failure to yield the right of way, failure to exercise due care and making a U-turn on a curve or hill. The first charge is connected to Scanlan’s death, while the other two are related to the crash.
Solomon works as an investigative reporter for WHBQ (Channel 13), the region’s Fox affiliate owned by Rincon Broadcasting.
It was not clear from the station’s report on the incident if Solomon was placed on administrative leave while her criminal case progresses.
In a statement, the Memphis Association of Black Journalists said it was aware that one of its members was involved in an incident that was connected to one of its members.
“Our thoughts are with both our member and the deceased as the incident remains under investigation by local authorities,” the organization said.
