T-Mobile introduces new postpaid plans with price-lock guarantee

Wireless provider T-Mobile has introduced new post-paid plans with lower costs, added features and a new five-year price-lock guarantee.

The plans — Experience More and Experience Beyond — replace some of the company’s Go5G plans introduced a few years ago.

Experience More costs $85 per month — a figure that includes taxes and fees — and incorporates 60 GBs of hotspot data (up from 50GBs), premium data on the company’s wireless network and satellite connectivity via Starlink through the end of the year.

Experience Beyond is the company’s flagship plan, starting at $100 per month, with 250 GBs of hotspot data (up from 50 GBs) and streaming perks like Netflix, Apple TV Plus and Hulu included. It also comes with satellite connectivity.

Both plans offer multi-line discounts to those who add two or more lines, as well as the company’s five-year price-lock guarantee, a promise to customers that their base price won’t increase during the first 60 months of service.

Jon Freier, the company’s president of consumer business, said the price lock guarantee and new plans were meant to help customers during a time when inflation has resulted in the cost of other goods and services to skyrocket.

“We know value and savings matter more than ever right now, and we’re giving customers just that with these new plans — in addition to peace of mind knowing the price of their plan will stay the same for the next five years,” Freier said in a statement. “At T-Mobile, we’ve always been focused on giving people the best value, network and experience — and our new plans deliver on this, including the Magenta Status treatment and benefits our customers love.”

Both new plans include access to the company’s 5G wireless network, including its ultra-capacity service. It also allows multi-line customer to take advantage of something called “Family Freedom,” where T-Mobile promises to help cover up to $800 per line to help customers switch from AT&T and Verizon by giving them bill credits that can be applied to new phones on T-Mobile.

In addition to increased competition from its two rivals AT&T and Verizon, T-Mobile has faced outward pressure from prepaid services that offer no-frills talk, text and unlimited data at per-line prices that undercut many of its base plans.

The trade-off with prepaid service is that it typically comes without brick-and-mortar stores that allow customers to purchase phones or receive in-person support for their devices and service plans — typically, everything must be done online (in some cases, phone support is available).

T-Mobile’s prepaid plan, Metro by T-Mobile, is one of the rare exceptions, with the company continuing to operate physical stores — though some of the company’s best perks are relegated to online purchases.

Starting this week, Metro by T-Mobile is relaunching its “$40 Period” plan, which couples unlimited talk, text and 5G data access for $40 per month, a price that includes taxes and fees. The plan comes with a free 5G phone (though customers typically pay the tax) and requires porting in a phone number from another carrier.

Metro by T-Mobile also refreshed its plans with four new ones — Starter, Starter Plus, Flex Unlimited and Flex Unlimited Plus — each with their own perks that increase as customers agree to pay more.

The announced prices are for four lines of service, and range from $25 per month (Starter) to $35 per month (Flex Unlimited Plus), with a $5 account fee tacked on during the first month only. Per-line pricing wasn’t immediately disclosed. Each of the plans includes a 5G phone and a five-year price-lock guarantee. The new plans are available to new and existing customers starting on April 24.
